BRIEF HISTORY

Kanlungan International traces its roots back to 2001

it began as a mountaineering group in the Philippines. Their inaugural climb on Mt. Romelo in Siniloan, Laguna marked the beginning of their journey. The driving force behind this initiative was Mr. Herald Villarca, affectionately known as Sir Kyut, who envisioned something greater than mere mountain adventures. Under Sir Kyut’s leadership, the group transitioned on 2004 into an environmental movement known as “Kanlungan Kilusan para sa Kalikasan”, initiating community projects in Tondo, Manila. Their focus on environmental stewardship soon expanded to encompass broader social issues affecting marginalized communities.

In 2005, the group gained national recognition when they were honored at Malacanang Palace as one of the Ten Accomplished Youth Organizations (TAYO) of the Philippines. This acknowledgement came in response to their impactful projects, Oplan Sagip Pier Program, which aimed to assist young individuals (in North Harbor Pier Manila) struggling with addiction to a chemical substance known as “rugby”.
